GOLF On the barometer of golfing holidays, the Murray ranks as one of Australia's best. There can be few better sights for a golfer than standing on the tee with driver in hand and staring down a par five hole at Yarrawonga's Murray Course with the mighty Murray River running the length of the fairway; or facing up to a daunting par 3 at Murray Downs Golf Course, with a large lake separating tee and green. Between Albury and Mildura, on both the Victorian and NSW sides of the river, are some truly outstanding golf courses. They range from links style resorts, many architecturally designed, to smaller local courses. Five-time British Open champion Peter Thomson helped design courses at Thurgoona, Yarrawonga and Echuca. In this well watered region, fairways are lush, often bordered by spectacular Murray River Red Gums, while greens are well-bunkered and challenging. Add to this - welcoming clubhouses, on-course accommodation and a fine year round climate, all set against the wonderful backdrop of Australia's greatest river, and you have a golfer's paradise. Thurgoona Country Club Resort A classic Peter Thomson course in Albury. Black Bull Golf Club Brand new course in Yarrawonga designed by Peter Thomson and Ross Perrett. Deniliquin Golf Club North of the Murray, this course is close to town but surrounded by bushland. Cohuna Golf Club Local club of golfing great Stuart Appleby. Riverside Golf Club Scenic riverside course in sunny Mildura. HIDDEN GEMS 20
