FAMILY FUN ON THE MURRAY The Murray is a natural family-friendly attraction with wonderful swimming, fishing, boating, biking and riverside camping, with plenty more diversions for kids and the young at heart along the way. Experiences like family camping in a secluded spot among the river red gums, where the main items on the agenda are fishing, swimming, cooking and toasting marshmallows around the campfire. Or it could be a caravan or houseboat holiday, where cruising the river is the undisputed highlight. Hire a bike and cycle the many scenic riverside trails, or just go bushwalking – kids love spotting the rich native animal and bird life. Watersports are always a hit and there are many opportunities for boating, waterskiing, wakeboarding and cruising along the river and lakes. Canoes and kayaks can be hired in many places along the river. Swimming from the many river beaches on a hot day is an experience not to be missed, though care should always be taken: supervision and safety are paramount at all times. Fishing is also excellent in lakes and rivers throughout the region – the anticipation of hooking a Murray cod is hard to beat! Many of the region's historical museums have exhibits of interest for the whole family, but a must-see is the Pioneer Museum in Swan Hill. Kids love the old- time atmosphere, costumed characters, lolly shop and vintage car rides. Another highlight is a cruise aboard a paddlesteamer from Echuca, Swan Hill or Mildura – kids can watch the boiler being stoked and might even get to toot the whistle! If the kids just want to play, most towns have parks with free playgrounds and barbecues, and larger towns have swimming pools, cinemas, ten-pin bowling and skate parks. Weekend markets are fun for the whole family to poke around in, and libraries and galleries often have school holiday programs. Try to catch a performance by the amazing Flying Fruit Fly Circus in Albury-Wodonga. Experience waterskiing or tubing on the lakes at Kerang, Mulwala or Hume. Visit the Port of Echuca's Discovery Centre and catch a ride on an authentic paddlesteamer at Echuca or Mildura. Step back in time at Swan Hill's Pioneer Settlement, with horsedrawn carriage rides, old-time lolly shops and paddlesteamer cruises. MUST EXPERIENCE Whether you're here for a weekend or a longer holiday, the Murray is tailor-made for families. The kids will love it! 26
