RIVER ADVENTURES The Murray is an adventure waiting to happen. From leisurely pursuits like fishing or cruising, to adrenalin sports like waterskiing or skydiving, there's a legendary river experience waiting for you – so leap into it! Fishing is one of the Murray's classic experiences, and the legendary native Murray cod, Australia's largest exclusively freshwater fish, is what most anglers are after. The cod featured in Aboriginal mythology and made a big impression on early settlers, who were amazed by their size and abundance. These days the cod is a prized catch but other river lures include golden perch (yellow belly), trout, catfish and freshwater cray. Remember, the Murray is regarded as being in NSW, so you will need a NSW fishing license, available at local stores and service stations or online ( For much of its length the Murray is a slow-moving river, perfect for relaxed cruising, so it's no wonder that the region has the largest fleet of active paddlesteamers and houseboats in the world! For a sense of nostalgia, a ride aboard a paddlesteamer is a must. Watch the boiler being stoked, listen for the distinctive steam whistle and imagine life 150 years ago. Echuca is the home of the paddlesteamer, with a fleet of authentic restored riverboats moored at the historic wharf. Mildura and Swan Hill also offer daily paddlesteamer cruises. The most serene way to cruise the river at your own pace is aboard a houseboat. No need to book a hotel, just pull up where you choose and relax! Houseboat operators along the Murray offer a range from compact 4-berth to luxurious 12-berth models with sundeck, spa, ensuite bedrooms and state-of-the-art entertainment systems. Houseboats are easy to drive (no license required) and offer the ultimate in river freedom. Mildura Wentworth and Echuca Moama have the Fish for Murray cod on Gunbower Island or Lake Mulwala. Hire a luxury houseboat in Mildura or Echuca and experience the bliss of easygoing river life. Ride an historic 19th-century paddlesteamer at Echuca, Mildura or Swan Hill and feel the nostalgia. Feel the thrill of high-speed watersports – waterskiing or wakeboarding on the Murray or the region's lakes. HIDDEN GEMS 2
