WODONGA Separated from Albury by the Murray River, Wodonga is a great base for exploring the Upper Murray or the gourmet food and wine regions and High Country of northeast Victoria. One of the fastest-growing regional cities in Victoria, Wodonga combines old-fashioned country hospitality with modern amenities, parks, shopping and a lively dining scene. Your first stop should be the Gateway Village, on the Lincoln Causeway between Albury and Wodonga. It's home to quality artists, fine art galleries, theatres, a Mediterranean restaurant, fortnightly farmers market and an Aboriginal cultural centre. Outside are riverside picnic areas and walking tracks. There's more artistic talent at Arts Space Wodonga, a vibrant and accessible contemporary arts venue in the city centre. An excellent network of bike and walking trails around Wodonga makes getting around a breeze, but if you're feeling fit you should try the 64km High Country Rail Trail – the section from Bonegilla to Tallangatta skirts around the scenic Lake Hume. Bikes and maps are available from the Wodonga Visitor Information Centre. Two of Wodonga's most interesting historic attractions are on the rail trail route east of town. With 5000 sq metres of display space loaded with army vehicles, tanks, artillery and uniforms, Army Museum Bandiana is among Australia's best military museums. Nearby, Block 19 Bonegilla was built originally as an army camp during World War II, but the site later served as Australia's largest migrant centre, providing accommodation and training for some 320,000 migrants. At the Bonegilla Migrant Experience you can walk through remnant buildings, see photos and hear stories of life as a post-war migrant. Wodonga revels in its prime riverside location, but many historic and well- preserved towns are just a short drive away, including gold rush towns like Beechworth and quaint villages of Yackandandah and Chiltern, so take a slow scenic tour and stay a while. Visit the Bonegilla Migrant Experience, Australia's largest and longest-operating migrant centre providing a fascinating look at the life of a post-war migrant. Take in the Army Museum Bandiana, one of Australia's best army museums showcasing 190 army vehicles, dozens of field guns, weapons and medals. Cycle the High Country Rail Trail, where you can meander along the spectacular 30km section around the foreshore of Lake Hume. Go bushwalking and enjoy the views at Huon Hill Parklands east of Wodonga. View contemporary design at Arts Space Wodonga, offering an eclectic program of exhibitions, performances, workshops, recitals and forums.
