GANNAWARRA SHIRE Kerang, Cohuna, Koondrook-Barham, Gunbower Island, Lake Charm Most of the towns in the Murray region can boast river frontage, but not many can claim the riches of lakes and wetlands found in Gannawarra Shire. Encompassing Murray Valley Hwy towns Kerang and Cohuna, the twin river towns of Koondrook-Barham, a mini patchwork of lakes and the superb red gum forests of Gunbower Island National Park, this is riverine nature at its best. Between Kerang and Lake Boga are some 57 lakes and swamps, including Lake Charm, Kangaroo Lake and Reedy Lakes, where families connect for fishing, waterskiing, canoeing and other nature based activities. The wetlands around here are world-class for birdwatching – Middle Lake Ibis Rookery, the largest Ibis rookery in the southern hemisphere, has a bird hide where you can safely watch some of the thousands of birds that nest here. Of course, there's plenty to do along the Murray River here too. The towns of Koondrook and Cohuna are the main access point for Gunbower Island – Australia's largest inland island. The national park and state forest here hold a very special place in the hear ts of campers, anglers, canoeists and bushwalkers. Bounded by the sweeping bends of the Murray River and Gunbower Creek, the island is home to Victoria's second-largest river redgum forest, sandy river beaches and shady bush camping sites – find a spot and stay as long as you like! The Gunbower Creek Canoe Trail follows a marked 5km return route through Safe's Lagoon – perfect for getting a feel for this natural waterway. The wildlife and natural beauty of Gunbower and Kerang wetlands are protected by their international Ramsar (Convention on Wetlands) listing. Explore the newly opened Koondrook Red Gum Forest Walk on Gunbower Island. Play a round of golf at the home of beloved Aussie pro Stuart Appleby at the Cohuna Golf Club. Browse for local produce at the Koondrook-Barham Farmers market. Spot thousands of Ibises and other waterbirds on the wetlands of the magnificent Kerang lakes. Waterski at some of Victoria's best recreational lakes, Kangaroo Lake and Lake Charm. HIDDEN GEMS 40
